Welcome

Welcome begins before anyone enters. These pieces soften the boundary between outside and in, giving a home its first expression of warmth.

Timber-framed cabin entry canopy

The First Welcome

A sense of home before anyone steps inside.

This timber-framed canopy was built to shelter the entrance to our cabin, but its purpose became greater than protection from the weather. The cedar shingles, substantial brackets and careful proportions give the doorway a presence of its own.

It marks the beginning of weekends together and offers family and friends their first feeling of home before the door ever opens.

Long cedar flower box beneath a window

At Our Front Door

Softening the edges of home.

Our home is beautiful, but its architecture is defined by hard, clean lines. This ten-foot cedar flower box was designed to echo the tone of the front door and bring a natural warmth to the exterior.

Filled with color through spring and summer, it turns a strong façade into something gentler and makes the house feel welcoming long before anyone reaches the entrance.

Golf-cart garage with custom cupola and carriage doors

Beauty in the Useful

Even a practical building can feel welcoming.

The golf-cart garage worked perfectly as a place to hold what it needed to hold. But a purely functional building would have felt unfinished beside our home. The custom proportions, carriage doors and cupola were designed to make it feel intentional—something that belonged to the property rather than merely occupying it.

People began slowing their cars to look. That pause was the point: usefulness can still contribute beauty, character and a sense of welcome.

Sanctuary

A room becomes a sanctuary when every detail supports rest. Custom proportions, gentle light and quiet order allow the space to feel complete.

Custom primary bedroom with illuminated wood panels and bedside tables

Modern + Natural

A balance of warmth, light and order.

Floating ambrosia maple panels and integrated natural-edge bedside tables bring modern lines and organic form into balance. Soft backlighting warms the room, while hanging lights provide focused illumination for reading.

Retractable power cords keep electronics within reach, then disappear to preserve a clean, quiet appearance.

For My Wife

It is not done until it is done right.

The headboard and side table were made specifically for my wife and our primary bedroom, each designed for a particular space and purpose. Her eye can find a flaw in a nanosecond, and her standards have shaped how I work.

She taught me the principle that now guides every piece carrying the JK Woodsmith Company mark: It is not done until it is done right.
